Here's our flier for you to pass along and help spread the word How To Green Your School & Your Valentine
How Are You Greening Your Valentine?
o When you buy Fair Trade chocolate you ensure that no child, enslaved
or otherwise, labored to harvest or process the cacao beans.
Unfortunately, 70% of chocolate that is not Fair Trade comes from areas
documented to have child slave labor: the Ivory Coast (43%), Nigeria and
Cameroon (27% combined). Most large corporate chocolate makers refuse
to specify the source of their chocolate. Since manufacturers comingle
cacao beans in production, odds are that most non-fair trade chocolate
contains cacao from beans from areas that enslave children to harvest
cacao.
o When you buy Fair Trade you support the farming communities supporting
themselves. Fair Trade guarantees the participating farmers financial
and educational support necessary not only to survive, but also to
improve their communities and develop their businesses.
o You support the local economy when you purchase locally produced
products from local shops such as these products made in San Francisco
and Mountain View from a shop in Mountain View.
o You support your community when you purchase from local shops that are
part of your community. The owners and workers at these shops support
the community through volunteer work and fundraisers and your purchase
helps support these efforts.
o Organically grown coffee and cacao is less energy intensive, does not
use petroleum-based fertilizers, does not poison the growers and
harvesters with pesticides and keeps toxic pesticides out of your food.
o Shade grown coffee beans means the coffee trees grow underneath native
canopy trees that provide habitat for native birds and other wildlife
thus maintaining the natural eco-system of the area
We ask that the participating school or organization write and
send to us a brief article describing how they are using the funds to
help "green" their school or organization.
